Tamara Johnson (b. Waco, Texas, 1984) is a visual artist who works primarily with sculpture, performance and installation. Through a wide range of materials, Johnson’s work offers handmade replicas of household goods, ordinary nuances of architecture and unmonumental mishaps of public and private spaces. A paper plate becomes an open vessel on a gallery floor, the end of picnic cast as a permanent concrete setting, a colorful water hose references minimal form. Themes of absence, longing and humor focus our shared experiences of these objects to offer new meaning for the domestic and quotidian.

Johnson’s public works have been exhibited in Maria Hernandez Park (NYC Parks & Recreation Dept.), Socrates Sculpture Park (Emerging Artist Fellowship 2013), The LOT, LIC (Socrates Sculpture Park and Rockrose Development Corp.), Wave Hill (Sunroom Project Space Artist) and various solo and group projects at The CUE Art Foundation, SPRING BREAK Art Show, The CORE:Club, Air Mattress Gallery, Latchkey Gallery, Blackball Projects, NURTUREart, Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art, CR10 Arts and Microscope Gallery. Johnson recently received a grant from the Brooklyn Arts Council in 2018, a 2016 Individual Artist Award from the Santo Foundation, an Emergency Grant from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts and her public project “Backyard Pool” was selected for the Public Art Network Year in Review in 2015. She is currently a Visiting Lecturer in Sculpture at Southern Methodist University. In 2018 she and Trey Burns opened Sweet Pass Sculpture Park, an artist-run exhibition space located on an acre lot in West Dallas, which highlights emerging and mid-career artists in an outdoor setting on a rotating basis. The park was a 2019 recipient of a Nasher Sculpture Center Artist Microgrant.
